The accident happened September 18th in the morning on the playground when I was taking my kindies out.
I had a girl in between my legs and I was swinging her from side to side with my knees and all of a sudden, my right knee gave out!!
OWWWWWWWWW!! I didn't hear anything snap but it was an intense pain.
It felt like a dislocation. Anyway... I started to faint from all the pain and my Teaching Assistant, Allan (just a wonderful older Cree Man) helped lay me out on the ground.
Then Neil runs out with Ray, the VP, and they lift me up into the school cause it started to rain and they called an ambulance.
I couldn't stretch my leg straight...it was all cramped up.
Well, I don't know if you've been reading my blogs or anything...but Fox Lake is in the middle of nowhere!
So they took me to the Nursing Station next door (no Dr there).
The closest hospital is in Fort Vermillion.... and just my luck.... it began to rain!!!
So that means the roads are undriveable and I would need to get a plane to lift me out of there!
So that's just what happened. I was on a stretcher and put into the tiniest plane.
Neil--THANK GOD-- was able to come with me on the plane --- they were saying that he couldn't cause they also had to airlift a psych patient out and that they should do it in on trip.
I got really nervous...but then the nurses checked that guy out and they didn't trust him with me and he still needed to be sedated with some drugs.
Anyway, I get airlifted out to the hospital...where I did xrays and no broken bones.
The Doc's best guess was that either I tore a ligment or tendon, or it was slightly dislocated. (inside I was hoping for the latter!! cause a torn lig means weeks and weeks of recovery)
So he gives me crutches and says, "lay down... don't go to school for two weeks and I'll be flying in to Fox Lake hopefully, two weeks from now to check it out again cause by then the swelling will have gone down and I would have a better idea as to what is going on"
So Neil, thank God for him, helped me onto crutches and to the bathroom... he had to lift my leg up off the ground while I crutched forward!
Then through all these phone calls we get someone, who knew someone to pick us up from the hospital, take us to the pharmacy, and then to the airport, where Ray from Fox Lake chartered a plane to bring us back in. This plane was even smaller than the first one! a 6 seater including the pilot's seat.
But it was an absolute beautiful ride back in.
Neil got our VP Ray (who is so awesome) to pick us up and bring us home...
Our house is split, we have our bedroom and bathroom downstairs and the kitchen and living room upstairs (see video in prior blog)....
So I was stuck downstairs all day when Neil went off to work!
BUT, to make a long story good ...after that long day, 7hrs later that very night, I laid down and streched my leg out and all of a sudden I felt something shift in my knee.
20 minutes later my leg was all better! no pain lifting or turning... it was gone!!!
I kept saying to Neil, I told you I thought it felt like a dislocation!
But still.. the Doc said before that there's fluid in my knee from the injury and after I hyperextended it, it still aches a little and I have to be careful to let it fully heal.
BUT the major pain is gone! and it's not a torn ligment!!!
Neil and I kept saying that God answers prayers cause we prayed together at the hospital, and both of us-- on our own, not knowing what the other was doing-- prayed on the last flight in to Fox Lake. When we got home and last night it was somehow healed we prayed again to thank God for answering prayers!!!!!
What made the whole event worse yesterday was that I didn't have medical insurance.
There is a long drawn out explanation why...that I'll save you from...but basically I was in an in-between time to get the insurance.
A crack in the medical insurance system when you switch provinces in Canada and happen to be American.
BUT--- in the end of it all..... EVERYTHING got covered-- Yipee-Yai-yay!!! We're talking about around $9,000!!!
So, when I get the insurance offically 2mos from now...they will drop all charges at the hospital (they have the bill on an invoice but we didn't have pay anything!)
So that's the deal. Currently, I'm off crutches and trying to rest it as much as I can.
It still aches after a long day with my Kindergarteners!
See video below (it's old, 2 days after the accident).....
