Kindergarten

The start of school was rough for me and the little ones. There has been a whole lot of crying, blank stares, and acting out.  Understandably so, it is their first time in school and they don't understand very much of what their teacher is saying (why does she keep looking at me crossly when I just want to play?!).  That being said, I have been able to establish some routine, order, and comfort level with my little ones and they all are quite adorable. Allan, my teaching assistant, is a lifesaver!  He does whatever I say when I order him around--which I always feel guilty about--and translates everything I say into Cree so the kids understand. He's an older member of the community and well respected. He was one of the many who had been sent to a residential school (part of Canada's shameful Aboriginal education policy up until '91). In class, I call him "Moshoom" which means Grandfather in Cree.  So if I use Moshoom and Allan interchangeably in future blogs you'll know why.

Here are a couple of pics of my Junior Kindergarteners (I haven't been able to get pics of all my kids yet)....
